Empiricists, on the other hand, think that we see several particulars, like several sticks of equal length, and from that learn about Equality itself. Plato thinks we knew the universal and now see particulars, but empiricists think that we only see particulars and then create the universal in our minds as a conglomeration of the particulars.

This question became crucial again in the 17th and 18th centuries between the philosophers of the rationalist and empiricist persuasion.

The empiricist John Locke argued that the mind was a tabula rasa, or blank slate, on which experience writes. And therefore, Locke doesn’t believe in any innate ideas. Rationalist Leibniz, on the other hand, thought differently. He thought we have some sort of inborn aptitude to discover certain truths:
